Sustainable features

As set out in the City of Ottawa Green Building Mandate, the design of this fire station will reduce energy consumption, the use of natural resources, and impact on the environment, while improving occupant health and comfort. The building is LEED-NC® Silver Certified. As well, a highly reflective metal roof greatly reduces heat impact and summer air conditioning demand, enhanced commissioning procedures maximize effectiveness of building systems, high efficiency boilers and a highly insulated building envelope all help to reach an estimated 45% reduction in energy consumption over the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. The design allows a 42% reduction in water usage from the model standard. High recycled content and regionally manufactured materials are used throughout, including natural stone from a local quarry.
