Supportive Housing for John Howard Society of Canada
CSV Architects has designed new supportive housing for the John Howard Society of Canada. Funding was provided through the Federal Government’s Rapid Housing Initiative which aims to create new affordable housing for vulnerable populations.
This 4-storey, 28-unit apartment building provides safe, healthy, and affordable housing with indigenous women the target population. The design of the new building has a focus on supportive functions and communal spaces, including a multipurpose room, space for small group gatherings, a shared kitchen, and an outdoor amenity area. for occupants to enjoy.
Design collaboration
During the design process CSV consulted with Two Row Architects who acted as liaison with a local indigenous talking circle. Feature design elements are representative of the feedback received from these consultations.
Sustainable features
A large exterior amenity space is located on the South side of the building and there are large planters for residents to grow their own vegetables and herbs. An overall focus for the project was placed on occupant health and comfort both inside the building and out.
