Kincora Lodge / O’Brien House

Kincora Lodge, also known as O’Brien House, is located within the Gatineau Park in Chelsea, Quebec. CSV Architects, working with Isabelle Bradbury Architect, rehabilitated the lodge as a boutique hotel, transforming the 1930’s structure into a retreat for relaxation, wellness and appreciation of nature.

The new hotel contains eleven luxury guest suites, a grand Canadiana Room with wood burning fieldstone fireplace, a dining room, sunroom, library, and reception. The original kitchen was renovated as a commercial kitchen and boasts windows on three sides with panoramic views of the Gatineau Hills. The construction project began in May 2017 and was completed in March 2018. An elevator and new exit stair were constructed within the existing structure. Two new terraces of wood construction were built on the footprint of stone terraces that had previously been demolished. Site interventions included an expanded parking lot and an accessible board walk in the location of an historic woodland path.

Sustainable features

The restoration of the existing building was a sustainable re-use of a durable, quality building with low embodied energy. Energy efficient mechanical systems, water saving plumbing fixtures and LED lighting were installed throughout the building. Natural materials and low VOC paints were used. Minimal intervention was created on site with only drought resistant native species planted. Exterior lighting is all full cut-off. The project was designed to meet the Green Key Eco Rating standards for hotels.
