2019 City of Ottawa Urban Design Award, Community Partnership

CCOC Arlington

143-153 Arlington Avenue is a new 16-unit affordable low-rise stacked townhouse and apartment building for Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation (CCOC), a non-profit housing provider. The building, containing a mix of two and three-bedroom units is designed to meet the Passive House standard, while meeting the strict budget limitations for affordability. The Passive House standard sets very stringent limits on energy use, including heating and cooling.

Sustainable features

Passive House certification is being targeted. The building will comply with the use of super-insulated (12”) walls and roof, superior airtightness that is verified by a blower door test, triple-glazed windows, minimal thermal bridges in the exterior envelope, and heat recovery ventilation. The resulting low energy use encouraged the decision to eliminate fossil fuels entirely (and avoid the fixed costs on gas bills) in favour of a single utility bill per household.
