SWCHC Rosemount Branch
Somerset West Community Health Centre purchased an existing building in the heart of Hintonburg, at 30 Rosemount in Ottawa to house their new satellite community health centre. Program elements for the new centre include a medical clinic, administrative offices, community meeting rooms, an acupuncture clinic, and counselling offices. Barrier-free access was also provided to all floors by installing a new elevator.
Scope of work
CSV was initially brought on to conduct a feasibility study prior to purchasing the property. Following the land purchase CSV worked with SWCHC and Jackson-Brown Associates (Project Managers) to develop a functional program for the building. CSV then proceeded with standard architectural services and coordination of consultants including design to meet CSA Z8000 standard for medical offices.
History of the building
The existing building, constructed c. 1914/15 started its life as a Methodist church and served that function until 1931. It has since served as a synagogue, and a Knights of Columbus hall before it was converted to offices in the 1980s. The large arched front window is a heritage element remaining from the original construction.
Sustainable features
This project incorporated a wide range of sustainable design measures, intended to improve occupant well-being and maintenance costs including:
Upgrade of the building envelope (insulation and vapour control).
Materials with high-recycled content, low-VOC content, and regional manufacture were selected.
Chlorofluorocarrbons (CFC) refrigerants were eliminated.
High level of waste diversion from landfill was achieved by creating and enforcing a waste management plan.
Resource conserving fixtures and equipment were selected.
Enhanced occupant control of temperature, natural ventilation and lighting.
Assisted SWCHC to obtain incentive funding through Hydro Ottawa's saveONenergy retrofit program.
