CHEO Autism Satellite
CHEO Autism has opened a new 600 sq.m satellite office to offer additional activities and support to autistic children and their families. The program includes two large boardrooms for activities, an assessment room, an observation room, 10 private offices, 21 open workstations and a material preparation area. Renovation of the existing building included construction of a new private barrier-free entrance off the parking lot, a new canopy, and a new paved area offering an inviting outdoor space to be used for activities with the children or by staff.
Designing welcoming spaces
The design concept features a well thought out connection between the existing interior entrance off the main building lobby and the new outdoor entrance, creating a welcoming interior street with rich views and natural light. Learning opportunities are provided along the corridor through large size information panels featuring CHEO Autism goals, mission and services. The reception desk is strategically located to simultaneously control both entrances and access to both wings.
Sustainable features
Open-concept workstations and low dividers maximize natural light for the staff and grouping of the workstations into "work pods" encourages collaboration and team work. Per CSV standards, recycled content, low-VOC, rapidly renewable, and regionally sourced materials were specified. Low water- and energy-use fixtures were also provided.
