Overbrook Community Centre Renovation and Expansion
LEED-NC® Silver Certified
The Overbrook Community Centre has received several additions and renovations over its history. The latest expansion features a new full-size gymnasium complete with washrooms and change rooms as well as two new multipurpose rooms. The reconfigured, open concept lobby and central corridor were designed to promote community interaction and bring a sense of cohesion to the facility. Central to this idea of community interaction is the new courtyard area, which is perceived as both a visual backdrop to community events occurring in the facility as well as an extension of the adjacent rooms. This project also included a refresh of the full facility for a cohesive experience.
Sustainable features
The new addition is LEED-NC® Gold Certified. The sustainable features implemented will reduce energy usage by 42.5%, saving taxpayers $7,500 per year, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 tonnes per year. As well, portions of the existing building were removed and either refurbished or replaced. Of 146 metric tonnes of waste materials removed from site, 140 metric tonnes were diverted from landfill through recycling or reuse. For example, 4 tonnes of gypsum were reclaimed to be used in manufacturing new drywall and 70 kilograms of lighting fixtures were donated to Habitat for Humanity for resale. In total 95.9% of waste from the project was diverted from landfill.
