Certified LEED for Homes – Platinum
Passive House Certification pending
CHRA Sustainability Award for Ottawa Salus Corporation
Salus Clementine now known as Karen’s Place is a 42-unit apartment building which is owned and operated by Ottawa Salus Corporation and provides housing to people who are living with psychiatric illness (visit the Ottawa Salus website here http://www.salusottawa.org/ for more information on their supportive housing programs). Completed and occupied in Fall 2016, the building has recently been certified LEED Platinum for Homes by the Canadian Green Building Council. In Ottawa, this project is one of only 9 Platinum certified buildings and one of two multi-unit residential LEED Platinum buildings (see the list here). This certification means that Salus Ottawa and CSV Architects succeeded in their attempt to meet the highest standard for sustainable design. Only one other multi unit residential building in Ottawa has met this standard. The building was also designed to meet the Passive House Standard for energy efficiency. At time of this writing final Passive House Certification is pending.
Ottawa Salus Corporation as the owner came to the project with a deep commitment to sustainability. It identified that sustainable design would ultimately produce a durable building that would save energy and reduce operating costs. The money saved could then be reinvested into programs for the clients it serves. For this and other achievements Ottawa Salus has been recognized with the CHRA Sustainability Award for its visionary commitment to global sustainability.
The Salus Clementine project has been a successful prototype proving that conventional construction methods and off the shelf technology can be adapted to produce exceptional results in sustainable design. CSV Architects is now applying lessons learned on Salus Clementine to numerous new Passive House Projects.
