Andrew Fleck Child Care Services – Elsie Chan Building

Andrew Fleck Child Care (AFCC) has provided child care in Ottawa since the early 1920s. The main building, constructed in 1922 at 195 George Street, is Canada's oldest purpose-built child care facility. The Elsie Chan Building provides an additional 3,200 sq.ft of child care space to supplement the main programming.  The new building contains two play-activity rooms with a total licensed capacity for 40 children. In addition the centre has a 'front room' which was designed to the same scale and functional organization as a family home, complete with living room, dining area, and kitchen.

Sustainable features

The new program spaces at AFCC were designed with social sustainability in mind, fostering social development by providing children with a home-like atmosphere in which to grow. For example, a low counter and sink in the residential-style kitchen allows children hands-on learning opportunities. Large windows with very low sills provide access to natural light and views for children throughout the facility.
